Ivory and Flesh
Marlene Monteiro Freitas
The electric Marlene Monteiro Freitas returns to Montreuil after setting the boards alight three years ago with Bacchantes - prélude pour une purge. This time, she invites us to a strange and trance-like ball of statues...
The Portuguese choreographer devised this ritual of automatons when thinking about the myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who saw his work come to life, and the African effigies from Alain Resnais and Chris Marker’s film Statues Also Die. In this sensual opera, contradictory impulses collide to reveal the body’s furious, irreducible vitality.
